Mitch Heinz - Sandwich Maker

Originally calling Central Illinois home. Mitch was brought to St. Augustine via Baltimore, MD. He, his wife Jenn, son Cameron and daughter Ava have been here since Summer 2005. In early 2006, as a result of a struggle that the family was Mitch Heinzhaving. Mitch was brought to a position where he, while praying, asked God to just show him what he was to do and that he would be obedient to whatever God might call him to do. The result was that God placed on a Mitch’s heart to go and make sandwiches and hand them out to people.

This did not seem to make any logical sense to him but it was so overwhelming that he decided he would stick to what he had said and be obedient to God. So he set out not knowing the area very well, seeking advice as to where and if this was even feasible. After being directed and finding West Augustine on a map, Mitch set out to make sandwiches.

Set backs quickly ensued, but at each set back, God was there and in full control of the situation. He blessed the Heinz family with the perseverance that they would need, and that they did not have prior. God made each instance not a set back but a big set forward. So on March 2, 2006 the sandwich mission began, with Mitch and Cameron Heinz making 30 sandwiches lunches in their kitchen, complete with sandwich, drink, cracker, cookie and scripture card. This was after a failed attempt to start on March 1. Mitch then went and picked up a student at Flagler College in Mitch’s small group who heard about the failed attempt the day before and wanted to help in this outreach.

They arrived in the West Augustine just driving around asking people if they would like a lunch. They were received with mixed reviews getting turned down alot, but eventually gave away all the lunches that they made. One thing that God really impressed upon Mitch was that consistency was going to be key to the ministry. This proved very true as the weeks went on and set backs came and went but God was forming a bond between the West Augustine neighborhood and the Sandwich Mission.

This bond of trust has grown and continues to this day.
