2000 sandwiches, barbeques and the return of the curse?
Hello all and Praise God, It was a really exciting week this week ministering to people hearts through sandwiches. This ministry really seems to speak to peoples hearts and I think it may be summed up best in Acts 2:42-47
They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
As you can see in this passage and throughout Jesus’ ministry here on earth, that breaking bread together is a very important part. Meeting this physical need is the means by which people open up and allow God to minister to their spirit. Thus feeding them physical and spiritually. Just like our mission statement says.
Well a couple of events have taken place this week and a few events are still to come. On Wednesday the 2000th sandwich was handed out, Praise God. It took a while to get to the first 1000 but it seems like it did not take very long at all to get to the 2nd thousand. This is due to God raising up people to serve in this ministry. By raising Pat Higgins and his crew, God grew this ministry from 1 day a week to 2 and as you will find out in a minute sometimes even 3. God has also raised up people from all walks of life, ages and backgrounds to make sandwiches for the two days a week that we go out and minister to people. I want to Praise God and thank everyone who has helped out. God is doing a mighty work through you and your efforts. So thank Him and Praise Him for involving you in His Work.
Sometimes this stepping out of faith does have a down side. We are doing something here that Satan does not want us to be doing, and so sometimes “the sandwich curse” comes into play for those who really step out. This week the curse seemed to have fell upon Christina, who has been very faithful in coming each Thursday since school has started. This past week God put it on my heart to ask her if she would like to lead the bible study on Thursday. She happily accepted although she had not had any experience doing this sort of thing before, but since she has been coming so often, she felt she could do it. I was really happy to see her step up. That is what this ministry is all about, stepping up to what God has called you to do even if it is uncomfortable or out of your box. She was a little nervous, but she did great and really inginited a very good discussion of Salvation and how you can receive this free gift. The curse came into play shortly after when she was driving and her brakes gave out and instead of hitting the car in front of her she drove up onto the sidewalk. No physical damage of any sort was done, but her car was in need of brake repair after the incident. As she was telling me about it, the thing that shook her up the most was how nobody around really seemed to care about what had just happened. This world is sad and fallen. But we have hope in Christ, and this shows that we need to show and spread His love everywhere we go whether it is through sandwiches or it is through checking on someone to see if they are OK, or even if it is just a kind smile to someone having a bad day. Once we have received Christ into our heart and our eternity is secure we only have one job here on earth and that is to spread Christ’s love to those who don’t know Him. I think the Apostle Paul said it best in Philippians 1:20-26
I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.
We need to live for Christ.
I mentioned earlier about sometimes going out 3 times a week. This actually will be happening for the first time this week when we go out Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. On Saturday we are going to have a barbeque/potluck at the place that we have the bible study. God has laid it on Pat to do this, so Saturday November 4 we are giving it a whirl. We really covet your prayers for this because we are stepping out and doing something new. It should be a great time of fellowship and sharing God’s love. Please pray that God use this in a mighty way for the growing of His Kingdom. For His Glory, Mitch
